  • David Winograd, DO

Sarah Bush Lincoln Internal Medicine Physician David Winograd, DO, received the third quarter Bravo! Medical Staff Recognition award based on the actions he took to identify an illness in one of his patients.

His nominator wrote in part, “Dr. Winograd’s attentiveness, diligence and persistence in treating me as a patient resulted in diagnosing a significant health condition before it became even more serious. After just turning age 40, I scheduled a screening mammogram for myself. In mid-May, the exam was performed and during the procedure, the technologist noticed the compression on my breast caused a little bloody discharge. This abnormal reaction resulted in the need to convert my screening mammogram to a diagnostic mammogram. The technologist contacted my primary care provider, Dr. Winograd, to obtain the order for the diagnostic exam. My exam was completed and the results indicated that everything looked normal and I was to return in 2021 for my next screening mammogram.

Within a couple hours, Dr. Winograd called and stated that even though my exam was normal he would still like me to come in for a check-up. He then ordered a breast MRI just to make sure something wasn’t missed during the mammogram. The breast MRI was completed and there was one area of “non-mass enhancement” which appeared to be more benign. Since the exam indicated this area of enhancement though, Dr. Winograd suggested we perform an ultrasound. It wasn’t until the ultrasound exam that a 1.2 cm mass was detected in my breast. The mass was biopsied and then I received the very unexpected news - at just age 40, I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma.

Now that I have had time to reflect on my diagnosis, my mind is filled with so many thankful thoughts. I’m thankful that my technologist noticed the discharge, I’m thankful that Dr. Winograd called me for a check-up and I am most thankful that Dr. Winograd continued to order more exams and push for answers until we could get to the root cause of the problem. Dr. Winograd didn’t give up until he felt comfortable with the results. I am beyond grateful to have Dr. Winograd in my corner on this journey. Given the aggressive nature of my cancer, there is without a doubt that if I waited until 2021 to do my next screening mammogram, this cancer would have spread throughout my body. Sarah Bush Lincoln is lucky to have Dr. Winograd on the medical staff and I’m blessed to call him my provider.”

The Bravo! Medical Staff Recognition award is presented quarterly and is based on nominations submitted by patients, their family members, and co-workers to recognize any member of the SBL medical staff.
